Diasporas, Identity and Globalization

Towards the end of the XV and XVI centuries, the Jewish-Sephardic communities, still in the Iberian Peninsula, were forced to a vast array of adaptations resulting from intolerance and persecution. The escape, when posible, was many times the option, having been forced to travel the world, searching for sustenance and survival in very often distant places.

This escape coincides, is both feeding and being fed, with the so called Opening of the World, the arrival to new continents and new cultures. In few generations, the Jewish families that once lived in the Iberian Peninsula will gain a diasporic dimension in which their elements may be spread in diverse locations of the globe.

The Jewish identity will be rebuilt in new locations but never irreducibly confined to them - “sefarad” will always be an almost mythical horizon. The identity will have this escape mark, of the need of, at any moment, to have to leave, to flee. The diaspora will be to these populations, an identity marking the notion of cosmopolitanism we have today: The transnational life, the international contacts, the establishment of networks.

Thus, we are not just facing a picture concerning a self identity, but rather, before a way of being in the world, of conceiving it, which is the matrix of modernity itself.

To bring Lands of Sefarad to this subject  is to connect the most distant of this collective past to the most vertiginous of the present: equating an identity that, far from being static, is an identity in change and recreating on its own instability, constantly seeking tools for its survival.

Angelo A F Assis

Angelo Adriano Faria de Assis. PhD in History by the Universidade Federal Fluminense (Brazil). Post-doctor by the  Universidades of Lisboa and of Évora. Professor D Universidade Federal de Viçosa (Brazil). Researcher of  Cátedra de Estudos Sefarditas "Alberto Benveniste" of the Universidade of Lisboa. President of the National Association of History, section of Minas Gerais - Anpuh-MG, in the 2018-2020 biennium. Has experience in the field of History, with emphasis on History of Brasil Colônia, working mainly on the following subjects: Inquisition in Brazil; Inquisition in the Iberian and colonial world; religions and religiosities in the Ibero-American world; crypto-Judaism; new Christians; history teaching; literature, history and memory, with several books, articles and chapters on these topics.

António Amorim

Professor at Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade do Porto. His research focuses on genetics with special emphasis on the population perspective, pure and applied, namely the reconstruction of the genetic history of populations of Jewish origin or influence. His more than 400 publications in the form of books, book chapters and articles in indexed journals include more than ten related to the latter theme.

António Andrade

António Manuel Lopes Andrade holds a Ph.D in Literature from the University of Aveiro and is currently Assistant Professor in the Department of Languages and Cultures at the same university. As a member of the Research Centre for Languages, Literatures and Cultures of the University of Aveiro, his main interests are Portuguese Renaissance Humanism, Neo-Latin Literature, History of the Portuguese Sephardic Diaspora, and the History of Science. For the last few years he has been the Principal Investigator of the Project “Dioscorides and the Portuguese Humanism: Amato Lusitano’s Commentaries” funded by Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology.
 

António Bento

António Bento is a Professor at the University of Beira Interior (UBI, Covilhã, Portugal). He currently directs the UBI Library. His research focuses on the areas of Political Philosophy, Political Theology, Jewish Studies, Rhetoric and Political Communication. At UBI he is a member of the Labcom.IFP Research Center, integrating the Institute of Practical Philosophy (IFP) and the Center for Jewish Studies (CEJ).

 

Anun Barriuso

Teacher, Researcher and Historian of the Jewish legacy in Sefarad and La Raya (borderline) with Portugal. Vice president in Madrid of the Cultural Association, TARBUT SEFARAD, Founding member of the Studies Center ISAAC CAMPANTON. Speaker and participant in the organization of the congresses celebrated in Zamora and Portugal, in 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017. Activities and permanent meetings with the work group of spanish teachers, Centro Sefarad Israel and Ministerio de Educación, for the elaboration of the curriculum of the current law of Education LOMCE, which includes the teaching of the Holocaust. Co-author of the book “El Norte de Sefarad” and of several articles in specialized magazines, such as “Las sinagogas del Mediterráneo español”, “La judería de Aguilar de Campoo”, “La judeofobia en el refranero español”, “Raíces” several publications in red Tarbut Sefarad and eSefarad… Publication of the artícle “La presencia judía en el Norte de Sefarad. La singularidad de los anusím: los judíos escondidos”, in the magazine Cuadernos de Campoo, September 2010.

 

Avraham Milgram

He was a historian at the Yad Vashem Holocaust Museum. He studied History of the Jewish People at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and his doctorate at the Institute of Contemporary Judaism of this University. He was historian of the Jewish Pavilion no. 27 in Auschwitz. He is the author of several books: Os judeus do Vaticano, (1994); Portugal, Salazar e os Judeus (Lisboa, 2010 e Jerusalém 2011). He edited the volumes of the Enciclopédia dos Justos concerning the years 2000-2005 and of collective works published in Brazil and Israel.

 

Carla Vieira

Doctorate by the Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas da Universidade Nova de Lisboa (NOVA FCSH) with the thesis Uma amarra ao mar e outra à terra. Cristãos-novos no Algarve (1558-1650) (published in 2018), is a researcher for CHAM – Centro de Humanidades, NOVA FCSH, and of Cátedra de Estudos Sefarditas Alberto Benveniste da Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa. Currently, she is developing the postdoctoral project "Nação entre Impérios. Cristãos-Novos e Judeus portugueses nas relações Luso-Britânicas (1ª metade do século XVIII)" (supported by FCT: SFRH/BPD/109606/2015).  She integrates the editorial committee of the magazine Cadernos de Estudos Sefarditas and is the author of several publications, among which: “Observing the skies of Lisbon. Isaac de Sequeira Samuda, an estrangeirado in the Royal Society”, Notes & Records. The Royal Society of the History of Science 68: 2 (2014); “Abraham Before Abraham. Pursuing the Portuguese Roots of the Seixas Family”, American Jewish History 99: 2 (2015); and “The Puzzling Path of a Recondite Text: The Composition, Circulation, and Reception of the Notícias Recônditas in Eighteenth-Century England”, Church History 88: 2 (2019).

 

Daniel Strum

Daniel Strum holds a BA in Economics from the University of São Paulo (USP), and an MA and PhD in Jewish History from The Hebrew University of Jerusalem. His studies focus on the judicial and reputational mechanisms that supported the expansion of markets in the trans-Atlantic trade during early modern times. He was a visiting scholar at Stanford and Yale universities, and was granted the Clarival do Prado Valladares prize in Brazilian History, the Hanadiv Fellowship in European History, and The Hebrew University of Jerusalem’s Rector and the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology doctoral fellowships among other distinctions. His book The Sugar Trade: Brazil, Portugal and the Netherlands (1595–1630) was published by Stanford University Press in 2013. He has published in distinguished journals, such as the Economic History Review. He is currently a professor in the History Department at the University of São Paulo.
 

David Wertheim

David Wertheim (PhD, Universiteit Utrecht, 2005) is director of the Menasseh ben Israel Institute for Jewish Studies in Amsterdam. He authored Salvation through Spinoza, a Study of Jewish Culture in Weimar Germany (Brill, Leiden: 2011) and is currently working on a study of the significance of Jewish topics in Dutch public debate.

 

Elvira Azevedo Mea

Is a retired professor from the History Department of Faculdade de Letras da Universidade do Porto. Is a member of merit of the Academia Portuguese de História, the World Union of Jewish Studies", the Confraria Internacional de Investigadores de Toledo, the Scientific Council of the  "Associação Portuguesa de Estudos Judaicos", the "Associação de Amizade Portugal-Israel", has held conferences, participated in congresses and taught courses in various national and foreign universities, such as Helsinki, Nancy, Paris (Sorbonne), Rennes, London, Santiago de Compostela, Castilla-La Mancha, Seville, Naples, Udine, Jerusalem, Montreal, New York, Macau, Luanda, Salvador da Bahia, Miami, etc. Was president of the Centro de Estudos Africanos da Universidade do Porto  from 1999 to 2010, where she coordinated interdisciplinary research on Africa, organized and taught the Masters of African Studies, which took place in Cape Verde twice. With a historical research linked mainly to Judaism, New Christians, Inquisition and Marranism and History of Africa in the social, cultural and of the mentalities, is the author of dozens of works published in the country and abroad, among which, the books: "O Sefardismo na Cultura Portuguesa", Paisagem, Porto, 1974;  "A Inquisição de Coimbra no Século XVI.  A Instituição, os Homens e a Sociedade", Fundação Eng. António de Almeida, Porto, 1997;  "BEN-ROSH. Arthur Carlos de Barros Basto, o Apóstolo dos Marranos. O Proselitismo Judaico no Século XX". Editora Afrontamento, Porto, 1997. "Eça de Queiroz" Award for Biographical Essay of the Lisbon Municipality, 1997; “Amílcar Paulo, o Delfim do Capitão Barros Basto”, Porto,  2018. President of the board of the NGO África Solidariedade with an activity of aid to the hospital of Songo (Mozambique) and of monitoring and support to African university students in Portugal, S. Tomé and Mozambique.

Florbela Veiga Frade

PhD in Modern History, integrated researcher at CHAM, FCSH, Universidade Nova de Lisboa. She has dedicated the last twenty years to the study of Jews and New Christians in Portugal and Europe.

 

Inês Fialho Brandão

She coordinates the Espaço Memória dos Exílios in Cascais, a research and exhibition center dedicated to the memory of the refugees and exiles who passed through Portugal between 1933 and 1945. She is the author of publications on collections and art history, and contributes regularly to publications of the specialty. In 2017, she published 'What's in Lisbon? Nazi-era provenance research and Portuguese sources' - in the Journal of Contemporary History. BA in History and Art History (University of Edinburgh, 2000) and Masters in Museum Studies and Near Eastern Studies (New York University, 2002). Scholarship holder from  FCG and FLAD. Currently prepares the PhD at the National University of Ireland, funded by FCT (2012-2015. She is correspondent in the Iberian Peninsula for the Holocaust Art Research Project.

 

José Manuel Laureiro

Diploma in Teaching of General Basic Education, Specialty in Human Sciences. Degree in Geography and History, Section of History. Teacher in Public Centers since 1977. Carrer Public Official. Director of different Educational Centers in Madrid. Invited Professor as speaker at the Universidades Complutense and Autónoma of Madrid. President of Tarbut Madrid. Vice President of the Centro Isaac Campantón. Founding member and Treasurer of AEPES (Asociación Española de Profesionles de la Enseñanza de la Shoá “Enmanuel Ringelblum”). Co-organizer of the I Encuentro de Tarbut Sefarad. Madrid, October 2009. Co-organizer and speaker of 5 Congresses in Zamora on the Jewish History of Zamora, Castilla and La Raya (borderline) with Portugal. Co-author, with Anun Barriuso of the book “El Norte de Sefarad”, published in Jerusalem (Israel). Author of numerosos articles signed with Anun Barriuso, some of them translated to English, Portuguese and Hebrew. Collaborator in the digital radio “Radio Sefarad”, in which co-directs the program “Sefarad paso a paso”.

 

Luis Ludeña Lopez

Born on July 31, 1951 in CALASPARRA-MURCIA. Ancient Superior Bachelor of Letters; of the Notary Officers' Corps (retired); University Diploma in Inheritance and Trade Laws; Master in Fiscal and Tax Consulting. Counselor-Secretary of "Upon-Sdad. Coop". dedicated to the production and sale to the E.U. of olive oil; Counselor-President of "Hondonera-Sdad.Coop." dedicated to the production and export of fruits and vegetables for the E.U.

 

Lyslei Nascimento

Lyslei Nascimento is Professor of Theory of Literature and Comparative Literature at Universidade Federal of Minas Gerais (Brazil), where she is sub-coordinator of the Post Graduate Program in Literature: Literary Studies, and where she coordinates the Nucleus of Jewish Studies of UFMG and is editor of the magazine Archivo Maaravi: Digital Magazine of Jewish Studies. In 2015, she has won the 2015-2016 Travel Award for Latin American Jewish Research of the Texas University in Austin. She was a Visiting Researcher in 2015, at Texas University, Austin, EUA.

 

Maria Antonieta Garcia

PhD in Sociology and Master in Portuguese Literature and Culture, graduated in Romanic Philology at the Faculdade de Letras da Universidade Clássica de Lisboa.  Associate Professor at the Universidade da Beira Interior (Retired) has developed her research in Judaism and Identities. She has participated in national and international congresses.
She published the books, among others: Inquisição e Independência – Um Motim no Fundão (1580), Coimbra, 2006. “Fios – Para um Roteiro Judaico da Covilhã”, 2001. “Guarda – História e Cultura Judaica”, 1999. Judaísmo no Feminino, 1999. Denúncias em Nome da Fé, Caderno de Culpas do Bispado da Guarda, do seu Distrito e das Visitações, 1996. Os Judeus de Belmonte: Os Caminhos da Memória, 1993. Coauthored several works, mostly integrated in the themes of History and Sociology of religions.

Nuno Martins Ferreira

PhD in History from the Faculty of Letters of Universidade de Lisboa and Associate Professor at Escola Superior de Educação do Instituto Politécnico de Lisboa, in the area of Social Sciences. He teaches in the undergraduate courses in Basic Education and Sociocultural Animation, and in the Masters of Pre-School Education and Teaching of the 1st Cycle of the Basic Education and of History and Geography of Portugal in the 2nd Cycle of the BE, of which he is coordinator. He is the current president of the Interdisciplinary Center for Educational Studies of ESELx and, in the area of research, has as areas of interest history of education, especially in the context of teachers training (19th and 20th centuries) and of school patrimony, coordinating the project Memory and Identity: Research and Safeguarding of the historical patrimony of Escola Superior de Educação de Lisboa.

 

Ronnie Perelis

Ronnie Perelis is the Chief Rabbi Dr. Isaac Abraham and Jelena (Rachel) Alcalay Chair in Sephardic Studies.
Associate Professor of Sephardic Studies at the Bernard Revel Graduate School of Jewish Studies of Yeshiva University. His research explores connections between Iberian and Jewish culture during the medieval and early modern periods. His essays on Sephardic history investigate the dynamics of religious transformation within the context of the crypto-Jewish experience. His book, Blood and Faith (Indiana University Press, 2016), explores family and identity in the Sephardic Atlantic world. Perelis’ engages his students in critical thinking about the past and the nature of culture. He is energized by the passion, curiosity and intelligence of his students at Yeshiva College, Stern College for Women and at the Revel Graduate School.
Teaching and research interests in Jewish Culture and Society in Medieval Iberia; Post-Expulsion Sephardic Diasporas; Early Modern Jewish Autobiography and Travel Literature; Inquisition and Crypto-Judaism: Colonial Latin America; Atlantic Studies. Latin American Jewish Culture.

 

Saul Gomes

Graduated in History, by the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa, in 1985. 
In 1989 obtained the title of Master in Medieval History by the same faculty. In 2000, he studied in the Medieval History specialty, at the University of Coimbra, where he held his public examinations, defending the dissertation entitled "In Limine Conscriptionis", in the Monastery of Santa Cruz de Coimbra (XII to XIV centuries).
Since 1987, he has taught at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Coimbra, where, since 2009, he has been Associate Professor with aggregation. He is a corresponding member of the Portuguese Academy of History, collaborator of the Center for the Study of Religious History of the Portuguese Catholic University and researcher at the Center for History of Society and Culture of the University of Coimbra. In 1999 he was awarded the Gulbenkian Science Prize for his work: "Intimacy and Charm, The Cistercian Monastery of Santa Maria de Cós."

 

Susana Bastos Mateus

Researcher at the CIDEHUS of Universidade de Évora; from Cátedra de Estudos Sefarditas Alberto Benveniste da Universidade de Lisboa, and a member of CEHR - Universidade Católica Portuguesa. She is the author, in collaboration with Paulo Mendes Pinto, of the book Lisboa, 19 de Abril de 1506. O Massacre dos Judeus (Lisbon, 2007). Coordinated, with Carla Vieira, the book Mendes Benveniste. Uma família sefardita nos alvores da modernidade (Lisbon, 2016). With Jaqueline Vassallo and Miguel Rodrigues Lourenço published Inquisiciones: Dimensiones Comparadas (siglos XVI-XIX) (Córdoba, 2017). She is part of the editorial committee of the magazine Cadernos de Estudos Sefarditas. Her main area of research is centered in the impact of the forced conversion of the first generations of New Christians, as well as the dynamics of the Sephardic Diaspora in the 16th century.

 

Yehonatan Elazar-DeMota 

Hakham Yehonatan Elazar-DeMota was born in Miami, Florida, and comes from a Caribbean-Sepharadi family, via the Dominican Republic, Curação, Holland, and Iberia. He received his rabbinic and hazzanuth training initially under Hakham Yosef Benarroch (of blessed memory). Moreover, he is a certified shohet and mohel. He received rabbinic ordination from Hakham Mordekhay Levi de Lopes in 2008. In 2009, he moved to the Dominican Republic and established the Sepharadi Beth Midrash in Santo Domingo, also serving as the shohet of the community. In August 2014, he moved back to Miami to pursue graduate course work in religious studies at Florida International University. While there, he was part of Theta Alpha Kappa (honor's society for religious studies). He has spoken at numerous conferences around the world, including topics in population genetics, Jewish feminism, and Caribbean Sepharadi history. He has a Master Degree in Latin American and Sepharadi studies (2016). He was awarded departmental distinction for his thesis defense and grade point average. Apart from academia and rabbinics, he is an international jazz musician.
Since September 2016, Yehonatan is a PhD Candidate at the Asser Institute. His research project is entitled ‘Ets Haim and the Early Modern Amsterdam Debate on Trade and War with the non-European World’. It is part of the project ‘The Global City: Challenges, Trust and the Role of Law’, funded by the Gieskes-Strijbis Fonds.

Born in Argozelo, Vimioso. Elementary school teacher. Master in History of the Populations by Universidade do Minho. I have devoted my research and published works on ecclesiastical history within the diocese of Bragança-Miranda.

Born in Bragança, he graduated in History and mastered Portuguese Studies and Documentary Sciences (retired), consultant in several areas of cultural heritage.

Born in Lisbon. He is a lawyer in this city and a researcher on the historical and genealogical themes of New-Christians.
